Samsung Galaxy S24 Series: We’re here to fill you in if you’re a devoted follower of Samsung phones and missed the company’s “Galaxy Unpacked” presentation today. Samsung previewed the debut of a new wearable health tracker that resembles Oura during the product event. The S24 smartphone range, which comprises the S24 Ultra, S24+, and S24 models, was showcased.

While AI advances took center stage (more on those in a moment), Samsung also made some minor improvements to the S24’s processor, design, and consistently excellent camera system.

On January 31, all three of the new S24 models will be on sale through Samsung and independent retailers. They are currently available for pre-order. The S24 Ultra, S24+, and S24 are priced at $1,299, $999, and $799, in that order.

These are the main highlights of the launch. Return soon for a more thorough first-look analysis and complete lab test results.

Artificial Intelligence is finding its way into almost every type of technology, from laptops to smart refrigerators, and the new Galaxy S24 series is no different. Samsung unveiled its Galaxy AI system at the event, an array of integrated capabilities enabled by the S24’s more potent Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 engine.

While Bixby assistant and AI-assisted photo enhancement are already features of Samsung phones, Samsung has made it clear that Galaxy AI is more central to the user experience and is frequently performed locally on the device and within the native Samsung apps. This is particularly important to those who value digital privacy. This implies that using AI doesn’t require storing and analyzing private data on Samsung’s servers, such as messages, calls, and images. In collaboration with Google, the majority of the most recent AI features were also developed.

Although additional time and extensive testing will be needed to determine whether these upgrades are really need or just gimmicks, we must acknowledge that some of the recently disclosed AI tips do seem practical, especially for the typical user.

Among the most innovative is the recently introduced “circle to search” feature, which enables you to search for anything by circling any element in an image, video, or text passage and get search results at the bottom of the screen in the app you’re using—all without opening a separate tab. Sharper zooming, post-production slow-motion video production, intelligent photo editing suggestions, and the ability to remove or rearrange elements for a more ideal shot—akin to the Google Pixel’s Magic Eraser feature—are all made possible by new AI-enhanced photo and video editing.

The S24 can also translate calls and texts in real time in up to 13 languages, even when the other person is using a landline or a non-Samsung phone. This feature is useful for meetings, lectures, or creative brainstorming sessions. It can also transcribe, format, and summarize audio recordings.

The New Titanium Frame for the S24 Ultra

The major design difference for the S24 Ultra is the addition of a titanium frame, which according to Samsung increases the high-end model’s durability and scratch resistance. We want to test this claim in our laboratory soon. The newest Corning Gorilla Glass Armor, which Samsung claims is the strongest ever, is now also utilized on the Ultra’s display.

Samsung claims that each model can now achieve 2,600 nits of screen brightness, up from 1,750 nits previously. A 120Hz refresh rate is now available for all three models, enabling more fluid scrolling and improved graphics performance.

Apart from that, most Samsung enthusiasts will be recognizable with the design and feel of the S24 range. The modest reduction in the S24’s bezel means that you get a little more display for your money. While the screen’s edges are a little flatter, the S24 Ultra’s corners remain square as opposed to the S24 and S24+’s slightly curved corners. The discreet S-Pen on the premium variant remained intact as well.

For all three models, the color spectrum has been slightly altered to include black, gray, violet, and yellow. Versions in green, blue, and orange can be ordered online from Samsung.

Improved Zoom and Image Clarity During Nighttime

Since the Samsung S23 line of cameras is already excellent, most consumers will probably find the S24 additions to be largely incremental.

The camera configurations on the S24+ and S24 are identical to those on the S23+ and S23. With the exception of the enormous 200-megapixel primary camera, 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and 10-megapixel telephoto camera, the S24 Ultra retains the most of the S23 Ultra’s rear camera arrangement. However, the S24 Ultra now sports a 5-x optical zoom 50-megapixel telephoto lens. It still has a 12-megapixel selfie camera.

The majority of camera system enhancements are software-based. Samsung promised AI-enhanced zooming, more adaptive noise reduction for videos shot with shaky hands, and crisper and brighter nighttime images and videos during the Unpacked event. In addition to the few AI-enhanced editing options already stated, this also exists.

Extended Battery Life

According to Samsung, the S24 and S24+ both gain a minor increase in battery capacity, but the S24 Ultra’s battery capacity remains unchanged. (The S24+ and S24 Ultra now have batteries with capacities of 4,900 mAh and 5,000 mAh, respectively.) However, Samsung claims that the improved cooling system and more effective processing processor would extend the battery life of all three models, which CR will soon test in our labs. Additionally, the devices come pre-configured with Dark Screen Mode, which can help you save power. (See our analysis of the best-battery-life cellphones.)
